Michigan POW Camps in World War II
Thursday, June 18, 7:00 p.m.
Online via Zoom
Professor Greg Sumner of the University of Detroit Mercy will discuss his book, Michigan POW Camps in World War II (History Press), which tells the story of the 6,000 German and Italian prisoners who lived and worked in our state between 1943-46. At a time of Homefront labor shortages these young men picked fruit in Berrien County, harvested sugar beets in southeast Michigan and cut pulpwood in the Upper Peninsula. It is a little-remembered chapter of our history, notable for the fact that many of the POWs later decided to pursue U.S. citizenship.
